What defines language?
Linguists use criteria like Hockett's 'Design Features' to distinguish between simple signals and true language. Key features include displacement (talking about things that are not present) and productivity (the ability to combine a limited set of symbols to create an infinite number of new meanings). Most animal communication—like a growl or a mating call—is fixed, meaning the message is always the same. However, a few species have challenged these rigid definitions. This scientific debate is fascinating because it forces us to define what we mean by 'language' and whether our human-centred definition is simply too narrow to capture other forms of sophisticated thought.
The prairie dog dialect
Research by Con Slobodchikoff on Gunnison's prairie dogs (*Cynomys gunnisoni*) has provided some of the most compelling evidence for complex animal communication. When a predator appears, they do not just make a generic 'danger' call. Instead, their alarm calls contain specific information about the predator's type, size, and even the colour of the clothing worn by a human researcher. We know this because scientists recorded these calls and played them back in controlled experiments, observing how the prairie dogs reacted differently to specific recordings. This suggests they have a rudimentary, shared set of symbols for describing their environment, which is a major step toward a structured language.
The bee's waggle
Karl von Frisch, a Nobel laureate, famously decoded the 'waggle dance' of honeybees. When a worker bee finds a high-quality food source, it returns to the hive and performs a series of movements that communicate both the direction (relative to the sun) and the distance of the food. It is highly precise, essentially providing a map for the rest of the colony. This is a classic example of displacement—the bee is communicating information about something that is not currently present. While it is not as flexible as human speech, it is a perfect example of how high-level information can be encoded and transmitted through non-verbal means.
The limits of apes
Projects like those with Washoe the chimpanzee or Kanzi the bonobo sought to teach apes human-like language using sign language or lexigrams. These apes showed impressive cognitive abilities, learning hundreds of symbols and understanding simple requests. However, they consistently struggled with syntax—the rules of grammar that allow us to string words together to create new, nuanced meaning. This is the 'holy grail' of animal language research. While they clearly possess intelligence and communication skills, they do not seem to use grammar. The research has been invaluable, not just for what it says about apes, but for what it clarifies about the unique structures required for human language.
