Erosion works by hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and solution; transport by traction, saltation, suspension and solution; deposition occurs when velocity falls. Vertical erosion dominates upstream, lateral erosion downstream — the single most useful sentence in this unit.

Middle and lower course landforms

Meanders form where flow is fastest on the outside bend, eroding a river cliff, while slower water on the inside deposits a slip-off slope. Continued erosion narrows the neck until a flood cuts through, leaving an oxbow lake. Floodplains and levées are built by repeated overbank deposition, coarsest material dropping first at the channel edge.

Lag time is the gap between peak rainfall and peak discharge. Impermeable geology, steep slopes, saturated or frozen ground, deforestation and urbanisation all shorten lag time and raise the peak — the standard structure for any flood-risk answer.

Worked example

Model answer: 'Explain the formation of an oxbow lake' (4 marks)

On a meander, the fastest flow on the outside of the bend erodes the bank by hydraulic action and abrasion, forming a river cliff, while reduced velocity on the inside deposits sediment as a slip-off slope. Over time this erosion narrows the neck of land between two bends. During a flood the river has enough energy to cut straight across the neck, taking the shorter route. Deposition then seals the ends of the old meander, leaving a crescent-shaped oxbow lake cut off from the main channel.
