Writing a question you can actually answer
A good enquiry question is specific, measurable, local and linked to theory. 'Is the river good?' fails. 'Does the velocity of the River Dove increase downstream, as the Bradshaw model predicts?' works, because it names the place, the variable, the direction and the theory it tests. Write a hypothesis you could disprove.

Primary and secondary data
Primary data is collected by you: river measurements, pedestrian counts, environmental quality surveys, questionnaires, field sketches, photographs. Secondary data comes from someone else: census figures, OS maps, rainfall records, council reports. Strong enquiries combine both, using secondary data for context and primary data to answer the question directly.

Sampling and reliability
Random sampling avoids bias but may miss areas. Systematic sampling, such as every 100 metres, gives even coverage and is easy to justify. Stratified sampling ensures each group or land use is represented in proportion. Reliability improves with repeat readings, an agreed method between everyone collecting, calibrated equipment and recording the weather and time, since both change results.

Conclusion and evaluation
The conclusion answers the original question directly using your own figures, and states whether the hypothesis is supported, partly supported or rejected. The evaluation identifies specific weaknesses and, crucially, says what effect each had on the conclusion: 'measuring velocity with a float over 5 metres is affected by wind, which may have overstated speed at site 3 and weakened the downstream trend'. Naming a limitation without its consequence earns almost nothing.

Worked answer: evaluate the reliability of your data collection (6 marks)
One weakness was that pedestrian counts were taken once at each site on a single weekday morning, so a market or bus timetable could have inflated one figure and the pattern may not represent a typical week (2). A second was that the environmental quality survey used personal scores, so different group members judged 'litter' differently, making comparison between sites less consistent (2). Both weaknesses reduce confidence in the exact figures but not the overall trend, which was strong and repeated across all six sites, so the conclusion still stands while the precise values should be treated cautiously (2).
