A layered forest

Emergent trees rise above a closed canopy, with an understory and dark forest floor below. Light, temperature and wind change with height, so organisms occupy different niches. Lianas climb towards light, while epiphytes grow on branches rather than investing energy in a tall trunk.

A fast nutrient cycle

Heat and moisture speed decomposition. Nutrients released from dead material are taken up quickly by shallow roots, so most nutrients are held in living biomass rather than the thin, leached soil. Clearing trees therefore removes the system's main nutrient store.
