A focused enquiry might ask: ‘Does channel velocity increase downstream?’ Predict the pattern using river theory, identify an upstream and downstream site, and keep the measuring method consistent so location is the main variable changing.

Collect reliable data

Measure width with a tape and depth at equal intervals with a metre ruler. Estimate velocity by timing a float over a measured distance, repeating at least three times and calculating a mean. Work from the bank where possible, check weather and flow conditions, and follow an adult-led risk assessment.

A scatter graph can compare distance downstream with velocity or cross-sectional area. Describe the overall trend, quote values, identify anomalies and explain them. Recent rain, a bridge or a shallow riffle may create results that do not fit the pattern.
