Large, accessible coalfields supplied concentrated energy. Iron was used for machinery, bridges and rails. Imported raw cotton fed textile mills. These resources mattered because ports, turnpike roads, canals and later railways moved them in bulk.

Money, markets and empire
Banks and merchants could finance mines, mills and machines. Domestic demand grew with population. Atlantic trade and the British Empire provided markets and raw materials, while cotton supply chains were deeply connected to enslaved labour in the Americas.

Inventors improved existing technologies through experimentation. James Watt did not invent the first steam engine: from the 1760s he made Newcomen's design more efficient. Skilled engineers then adapted steam power for different industries.

A strong explanation links factors. Coal was more valuable because investment paid for engines; engines were more useful because transport connected mines, mills and markets. Rank causes, but show their relationship.

Source study — Watt's patent
James Watt's 1769 patent described a separate condenser that reduced wasted heat. A patent is strong evidence for what an inventor claimed as new, but it cannot by itself show how widely or successfully the machine was used. Compare the claim with production and sales records.

A new method of lessening the consumption of steam and fuel in fire-engines.
A patent records what Watt claimed was technically new: the separate condenser. It cannot by itself prove how quickly the design spread or how productive every engine became.
