The sanitary crisis

Waste leaked from cesspits into wells and rivers. Cholera epidemics struck Britain in 1831–32, 1848–49, 1853–54 and 1866. Many experts blamed miasma, or poisonous air, because disease was worst where smells were strongest.

During the 1854 Soho outbreak, John Snow mapped deaths and investigated water use around the Broad Street pump. The cluster strengthened his argument that contaminated water transmitted cholera, though the cholera bacterium was not identified until later.

Sewers and reform

The Great Stink of 1858 made the polluted Thames impossible for Parliament to ignore. Joseph Bazalgette's sewer network moved waste away from central London. The 1875 Public Health Act later required local authorities to provide sanitation and clean water.
