Before-and-after counts from a hedgerow removal
primaryGame & Wildlife Conservation Trust monitoring, Farmland bird survey data
Field A, hedgerow kept: 14 bird territories, 9 butterfly species. Field B, hedgerow removed in the 1970s: 4 bird territories, 3 butterfly species. Fields are the same size, same crop, same estate.
When a habitat feature disappears, the species that nested, fed and sheltered in it disappear too — and the effect shows up clearly in long-term counts.
