The Tempest: The Island Production
A storm, a magician, a spirit and a stranded court. Design a stage island and weigh up different readings of power.
What you'll make
A relationship map, an invented stage model, a programme feature and a developed literary response.
What you'll learn
- Character and motivation
- Imagery of the sea, sound and dreams
- Power and control
- Comparing interpretations with evidence
You'll need
A complete school edition of the play · Cardboard or paper for a model (optional)
Shakespeare gives no precise real-world map of the island; your stage model is your own invention. Sensitive material (Caliban's enslavement, an accusation of attempted assault in Act 1 Scene 2) should be previewed with an adult. No political conclusion is required.
Curriculum links
- Read and appreciate the depth and power of the English literary heritage through the study of Shakespeare, seminal world literature and poetry since 1789
- Study setting, plot and characterisation, and the effects of these on the reader
- Make an informed personal response, recognising that other responses to a text are possible and evaluating these responses
- Write formal and academic essays as well as personal and creative writing, summarising and organising material, and supporting ideas and arguments with any necessary factual detail
