The River Rescue Lab

Explain what happens to water from the moment rain falls on a hillside to the moment it reaches the sea.

What you'll make

A paper catchment model or tray demonstration, a data comparison and a cause-and-effect flood explanation.

What you'll learn

  • The drainage basin: watershed, source, tributary, confluence, mouth
  • Inputs, stores, flows and outputs
  • Erosion, transport and deposition in rivers
  • Physical and human factors affecting flooding

You'll need

Paper, card, pens; or a tray, soil and a watering can with an adult · No river visit or storm outing needed

Real data must show who published it and its date. Invented teaching data is labelled INVENTED. Never make up numbers about a real place.

Curriculum links
