What are human rights?
Human rights are basic entitlements every person has simply by being human, such as the right to life, freedom of expression and a fair trial. In the UK, many are protected by the Human Rights Act 1998.

Freedom of expression does not permit hate speech that incites violence; the right to protest does not permit endangering others. Citizens are expected to exercise their rights in ways that respect other people's rights too.

Balancing rights
Sometimes rights can conflict, such as privacy versus press freedom. Courts often have to weigh up competing rights and decide where reasonable limits should be placed, showing that rights are rarely absolute.
