Mechanising cotton
The spinning jenny let one worker spin several threads; the water frame used water power; the spinning mule produced strong, fine yarn. Power looms later mechanised weaving. Machines increased output but required capital and large buildings.

Why factories grew
Large machines and water wheels could not fit into cottages. Employers gathered workers near power sources, supervised them and divided production into tasks. Steam later freed mills from fast-flowing rivers and encouraged urban concentration.

Clock time
Factory bells fixed the working day. Overseers recorded lateness and powered machinery set the pace. Compared with domestic workers, factory workers had less control over when and how quickly they worked.

Productivity and disruption
Mechanisation made cotton cloth cheaper and more abundant. It also threatened some skilled hand workers. The Luddites of 1811–16 attacked particular machines and employers that they believed damaged trades and communities.

Source study — a factory rule book
An 1830s mill rule book lists fines for lateness, absence and damaged work. It is direct evidence of the discipline owners wanted to impose. It does not prove every rule was always enforced, so compare it with workers' testimony and wage books.

Workers, magistrates and the Home Office, 1811–1816
Letters and official reports describe machine-breaking, wage disputes, military deployment and demands made in textile districts.
The archive preserves both protest and surveillance. Government correspondence often describes workers as a threat, so voice and purpose matter.
