Recording well at the source
The quality of a recording is decided before any editing. Choose a quiet space, position the microphone close enough to reduce room sound, and set the input level so the loudest moment stays below the maximum. Digital clipping cannot be repaired later, so it is better to record slightly quiet and raise the level afterwards.

Audio and MIDI
Audio tracks store actual sound; MIDI tracks store performance instructions — which note, how hard, how long — and play them through a virtual instrument. MIDI is easy to correct and reassign to a different sound, while audio captures real performance detail. Most projects combine both.

Editing and arranging
Cut, loop and layer ideas to build structure: intro, verse, chorus, break. Quantising snaps notes to the grid, which tightens timing but can remove human feel if applied fully. Arranging is largely about contrast, so removing a layer for eight bars often creates more impact than adding one.

Mixing and effects
Mixing balances levels, places sounds across the stereo field with panning, and uses EQ to stop instruments occupying the same frequency space. Reverb creates a sense of room, and delay repeats a sound; both are easily overused. Compare your mix on different speakers, since a mix that only works on one system is not finished.

- People often think a poor recording can be fixed in the mix. Clipping and room noise cannot be removed.
- People often confuse MIDI with audio. MIDI is instruction data, not recorded sound.
