Why rules exist
Rules in sport exist to keep competition fair, protect player safety, and ensure a consistent, agreed way of deciding a winner. Without agreed rules, such as offside in football or the LBW law in cricket, games would have constant disputes over what counts as fair play.

The role of officials
Officials, such as referees, umpires or judges, are responsible for applying the rules consistently, making decisions in real time, and managing player conduct during a game. In many sports officials are supported by assistants (like linespeople in football) or technology (like Hawk-Eye in tennis) to help with difficult decisions.

Players are responsible for knowing the rules of their sport, respecting officials' decisions even when they disagree, and playing within the spirit of the game, not just its letter. Sportsmanship — such as helping an injured opponent or accepting a decision graciously — is what keeps competitive sport enjoyable and respectful.
