Year 8 pathway
Year 8 maths, stage by stage
Five stages covering all sixteen Year 8 maths objectives, taught with the reasoning and answer styles used at GCSE: number and accuracy, algebra, ratio and proportion, angle reasoning, and probability and data.

Every lesson has prior knowledge, key words, two learning parts, common mix-ups, marked checks and an exit quiz. All questions are written for these lessons.
Stage 1
Number, powers and accuracy
Powers and roots, exact versus rounded answers, and estimating so you can check your own work.
- Powers, roots and exact answersUse integer powers and associated real roots, recognise powers of 2, 3, 4 and 5, and distinguish between exact representations and truncated or rounded decimalsFilm4 marked checks30 min
- Fractions, decimals and percentages as one ideaWork interchangeably with terminating decimals and their corresponding fractions, and define percentage as 'number of parts per hundred'Film4 marked checks30 min
- Rounding, estimating and checkingRound numbers and measures to an appropriate degree of accuracy and use approximation to check answersFilm4 marked checks30 min
Stage 2
Algebraic reasoning
Simplifying, expanding and factorising, solving equations that need rearranging, and y = mx + c.
- Simplifying, expanding and factorisingSimplify and manipulate algebraic expressions by collecting like terms, multiplying a single term over a bracket and factorising into a single bracketFilm4 marked checks30 min
- Solving equations that need rearrangingUse algebraic methods to solve linear equations in one variable, including all forms that require rearrangementFilm4 marked checks30 min
- Straight-line graphs in four quadrantsWork with coordinates in all four quadrants and recognise, sketch and produce graphs of linear functionsFilm4 marked checks30 min
Stage 3
Ratio, proportion and rates
Sharing in a ratio, percentage multipliers and reverse percentages, proportion, compound units and scale.
- Sharing in a ratioDivide a given quantity into two parts in a given part:part or part:whole ratio, and express the division of a quantity into two parts as a ratioFilm4 marked checks30 min
- Percentage change and original valuesSolve problems involving percentage change, including percentage increase and decrease and original value problemsFilm4 marked checks30 min
- Direct and inverse proportionSolve problems involving direct and inverse proportion, including graphical and algebraic representationsFilm4 marked checks30 min
- Speed, density and unit pricingUse compound units such as speed, unit pricing and density to solve problemsFilm4 marked checks30 min
- Scale drawings, maps and scale factorsUse scale factors, scale diagrams and mapsFilm4 marked checks30 min
Stage 4
Angles, congruence and similarity
Angle sums in any polygon with written reasons, congruence conditions and enlargement.
- Angle sums in triangles and polygonsDerive and use the sum of angles in a triangle and use it to deduce the angle sum in any polygonFilm4 marked checks30 min
- Congruence and enlargementIdentify and construct congruent triangles, and construct similar shapes by enlargement, with and without coordinate gridsFilm4 marked checks30 min
Stage 5
Probability and data
Probabilities summing to one, listing outcomes systematically, and comparing average with spread.
- Probabilities that sum to oneUnderstand that the probabilities of all possible outcomes sum to 1Film4 marked checks30 min
- Listing outcomes with tables and Venn diagramsEnumerate sets and combinations of sets systematically, using tables, grids and Venn diagramsFilm4 marked checks30 min
- Comparing distributions: average and spreadDescribe, interpret and compare observed distributions of a single variable through appropriate measures of central tendency and spreadFilm4 marked checks30 min
Where this leads
Straight into GCSE maths
Multipliers, algebraic manipulation, proportional reasoning and angle proofs are exactly what the GCSE papers assess, so the marked practice papers are the natural next step once the five stages are done.
